Selecting a Baby Sweater Knitting Pattern – Three Things to Keep in Mind

Finding the perfect baby sweater knitting pattern involves more than just picking up a book somewhere and picking out what looks good to you. You need to consider who you’re knitting the sweater for so that you can make the best choice of pattern, yarn, and technique. Here are a few questions to keep in mind:

1. Is your pattern appropriate for the age of the baby?

When knitting sweaters for very young babies, you need to be careful that the design does not contain a lot of open work. Tiny baby fingers can easily get caught in the design and create a dangerous situation. Instead, choose a pattern that is tightly woven and doesn’t contain a lot of lace or filigree.

2. Is the yarn suitable for the baby’s skin?

You need to use a yarn that is both soft and machine washable. A baby’s skin is very soft and can be sensitive to harsh fibers. You may even prefer to use only natural or organic fibers. Any sweater that is worn by a baby will no doubt become messy on a regular basis. To make life easier for the parents, it’s a good idea to use washable fabrics.

3. Is the color suitable?

Some parents are very adamant about what colors their children wear whereas others are less particular. For example, if the baby is a boy, will the parents be happy with a yellow sweater or should you wait until after the baby is born and then knit the appropriate color? In some cases, a multicolored baby sweater knitting pattern will work well. In other cases, it won’t. As always, it’s better to be safe than to be sorry and feel that your gift is inappropriate or unappreciated.

Once you have evaluated your baby sweater knitting pattern and chosen the best yarn and color, you’re ready to start. Before long, you’ll have a sweater that your little recipient can wear safely and comfortably.
