Find the perfect baby knitting pattern for your special little one
It’s exciting to find great patterns for knitting baby items, but what if the pattern is not the right size for your baby? Does the idea of trying to adjust the pattern intimidate you? Here’s what you need to know.
Before you start to knit your item, knit a swatch. This is simply a square piece consisting of twelve rows of twelve stitches. After you complete your swatch, stretch it just enough to straighten the sides. Now measure its width at the cast-on side.
After you’ve measured your swatch, figure out how many stitches per inch you’re knitting. To do this, divide the number of stitches by the width. For example, if your swatch is 4 inches wide, you would divide 12 (total width) by 4 to get 3. This tells you that you are knitting 3 stitches per inch.
Next, you need to measure how big the piece should be in inches (if that’s the unit you used to measure your swatch). Then multiply that by the number of stitches per inch as calculated above. So, if your piece needs to be 36 inches, you would multiply that by 3 to get 108. That’s how many stitches you will need to do to make your baby item the correct size.
Depending on the knitting style you’re using, you might have to adjust this number. For example, If you’re working with a pattern for knitting baby sweaters that uses multiples of four, you’ll have to round up to the next multiple of four. In the above example, no adjustments would be necessary, but if you came up with 110, you would have to go up to 112.
Repeat this process for each piece in order to get a proper fit. Take into account whether or not the finished product is designed to be shaped. In these more complex cases, it’s often easier to redraw the entire pattern before you start.
Scaling a pattern for knitting baby items is simple in principle. It just requires a swatch, a ruler, and some simple math. Remember to consider all aspects of the pattern when you put it into practice. This will give you the best possible fit for your baby.
